Confederate War Memorial

This 25 foot masonry obelisk known as the Confederate War Memorial was erected in 1872.   Insets on all four sides were cut in the City Gate pattern.  Marble slabs on the side of the base list the Confederate War dead from St. Augustine (see list below).  Marble crosses are displayed on the north and south sides.  The Obelisk is surrounded by concrete posts linked by heavy chain and topped by cannon balls.

This memorial to the Confederate dead was erected due to the efforts of a group of St. Augustine ladies headed by Miss Anna Dummett.  Anna Dummett arrived in St. Augustine as a child and remained in the city for most of her 80 years, never, however, relinquishing her British citizenship.  She was sympathetic to the Confederate cause and cared for the children of Confederate General Hardee, her brother-in-law, after the death of the children's mother.  Miss Dummett presided over the Ladies' Memorial Association from its inception in 1866 until her death in 1899.  The group included prominent ladies such as Mrs. Julia Gibbs, wife of a Confederate Colonel; Miss A. Llambias; Miss Lucy Abbott; Miss Isabel Benet; and Miss Anna Humphrey.

Eight years after Anna Dummett's death a chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was formed and giver her name.  Markers on the Confederate War monument include those who died stating, "In memoriam our loved ones who gave up their lives in the service of the confederate States."  Another marker notes that it was "Erected by the Ladies' Memorial Association of St. Augustine, Florida, A.D. 1872."

The monument has never been cleaned or otherwise subjected to preservation treatment in its 131-year life.  It requires stabilization and cleaning.
